Freelance choreographer | Artistic Director PURPLE – International Dance Festival for Young Audiences, Berlin
Born and raised in Istanbul and currently living in Berlin, Canan Erek came to Germany in 1987 to study dance at Folkwang University of the Arts before going on to pursue choreography studies at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. She then concentrated on her own choreographic solo work and staged numerous productions in Berlin.
She worked as a guest choreographer for the Australian Opera in Sydney, the Hans Otto Theater in Potsdam and the Berliner Ensemble, among others. From 2004 to 2007 she was the Artistic Director of the Leipzig Dance Theatre company, where she developed a number of additional choreographies.
Between 2008 and 2018, she created several choreographies with adolescents as part of the Berliner Philharmoniker education programme. From 2012 to 2016, in addition to working on her stage pieces, she explored art in public spaces. It was during this period that her site-specific "dance poetry" performance series emerged and was performed in and outside of Berlin.
Since 2016 she has been the initiator and artistic director of "PURPLE – International Dance Festival for Young Audiences" which takes place every January in Berlin.
