Helena Waldmann

Chair of the jury | Freelance choreographer 

Helena Waldmann, a freelance dance director since 1991, studied applied theatre studies at the University of Giessen from 1982 to 1986. Her works have been touring internationally since 1993, and she has been producing and touring worldwide since 2003 with pieces including Letters from Tentland in Tehran/Iran, Headhunters in Salvador de Bahia/Brazil (UNESCO theatre prize), emotional rescue in Ramallah and Gaza/Palestine, and Made in Bangladesh in Dhaka (nominated for the German theatre prize DER FAUST 2015). Helena Waldmann is regularly invited to give lectures and workshops worldwide, most recently by the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority in Hongkong. She serves as a juror for various dance competitions, and has also been doing so for the German Dance Award since 2018. Among others, Hans-Thies Lehmann wrote about her in his classic book 'Postdramatic Theatre'. During the 2018/19 winter semester, she held the Bertolt Brecht Visiting Professorship at the Centre of Competence for Theatre within the University of Leipzig's Department of Theatre Studies. From January 2020 until the lockdown in March 2020, she worked on the piece Encounters for Tanztheater Wuppertal | Pina Bausch with four other choreographers (Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Richard Siegal, Gintersdorfer/Klaßen and Rainer Behr). In autumn 2020, she directed the short film Garderobenbegegnungen (Cloakroom Encounters) with dancers from Tanztheater Wuppertal | Pina Bausch.
