German Dance Award 2018

The DEUTSCHEN TANZPREIS 2018 will be awarded to the dramaturge and dance networker Nele Hertling.

For many decades, Nele Hertling has shaped the development of contemporary dance in Germany. Starting in the 1970s, she brought outstanding international choreographers to Germany, such as Merce Cunningham and Trisha Brown. As artistic director of the Hebbel Theater in Berlin (1988 to 2003), she established a strong European network of organizers, presented the Flemish and French dance avant-garde, and founded the "Tanz im August" festival. As a cultural-political networker and expert for dance, she persistently strengthened the position of freely produced dance. In doing so, her commitment has never been narrowed to specific forms of dance. Nele Hertling focuses on the broad horizon of the diversity of dance and the European cultural landscapes.

Outstanding performers 2018

Dance Award 2018 - Outstanding Performers
The jury honors the choreographer Meg Stuart and her company Damaged Goods as outstanding performers.

The American choreographer and dancer Meg Stuart lives and works in Berlin and Brussels. In 1994 she founded the company Damaged Goods. For each of her artistic works, she works with artists from different disciplines to find her own language in the field of tension between dance and theater. Her dance questions the place of the body in this world, interrogates, deconstructs, empties this body. The performers of Damaged Goods meet us as seekers - passionate, yearning, introverted, in physical and psychological states of emergency or in the memories of them.

Outstanding development in dance 2018

German Dance Award 2018 - Outstanding Development in Dance
The Ballet of the Nuremberg State Theater is honored for an outstanding development in dance.

With the direction of Goyo Montero, the ballet of the Nuremberg State Theater has developed into an ensemble of outstanding soloists and artistic personalities. With his outstanding choreographies, which are very demanding for the audience and the dancers, he decisively shapes the profile of the ensemble. Building on its classical training, the company has also acquired an excellent quality in contemporary dance techniques. An ensemble that, in collaboration with world-class choreographers - such as Jiří Kylián, Mats Ek, William Forsythe, or Hofesh Shechter - delights audiences and conquers the world's stages.
